Initially, I was overwhelmed by the novel, The Kite Runner. The novel had some very challenging vocabulary and symbols. However, I am excited to learn more about Afghan culture. I anticipate that one of the themes in the novel will be redemption. This is because in Chapter 1, Rahim Khan states to the protagonist, Amir, "there is a way to be good again".

ReplyDelete"That Hassan would grow up illiterate like Ali and most Hazards had been decided the minute he had been born, perhaps even the moment he had been conceived in Sanaubar's unbecoming womb after all, what use did a servant have for the written word?" (Pg 28) Discuss the relationship between literacy and class.
Response:
This passage is saying that there was no point for a servant to know how to read or write. There is a difference between literacy and class. Literacy is your ability to read and write. If you can't read or write you are classified as illiterate. Now class is used in different ways. In this case they mean like the poor class and the rich class. For most of the people in those times this was decided as soon as they were born.

response:Here literature isn't sugar and spice and everything nice. Amir actually uses his mastery of reading to belittle Hassan.Even though Hassan sees the beauty of literature Amir actually stops reading Hassan riddles when the activity no longer confirms Amir's superior status. Sometimes we think of literature as self-exploration, or a way to bring human beings together.

ReplyDelete'That Hassan would grow up illiterate like Ali and most Hazaras had been decided the minute he had been born, perhaps even the moment he had been conceived in Sanaubar's unwelcoming womb- after all, what use did a servant have for the written word?"
RESPONSE:Here, literature isn't sugar and spice and everything nice. Amir actually use reading to belittle Hassan. Even though Hassan sees the good in literature (like Amir), Amir actually stops reading Hassan riddles when the activity no longer confirms Amir's superior status. Sometimes we think of literature as selfexploration, or a way to bring us together. Not here, pal. Literature is some thang like power. And Amir uses its power against Hassan who. Amir, seems to have Baba's love.

ReplyDeleteEven though Hassan had treated Amir like his brother, Amir never thought of Hassan as a friend because of the race and religious differences between them. Amir somehow discriminated the Hazara which is Hassan’s race and the Haraza’s religious beliefs
