Response:Amir uses his mastery of reading to belittle Hassan. Even though Hassan sees the beauty of literature, Amir actually stops reading Hassan riddles when the activity no longer confirms Amir's status. Literature is power. And Amir uses its power against Hassan. Unlike Amir, seems to have Baba's love.

    1. Fredricka, I appreciate your response. It is accurate and thoughtful. However, I have seen this somewhere before, so I would suggest that you give me YOUR thoughts on the topic.

Response: Hassan is a Hazara, who does not get an educational privilege like Amir gets. Therefore Amir takes advantage of Hassan's inability to read by teasing him with advance words that he knows Hassan would never know the meaning to. Amir even gets more challenging riddle so Hassan will not solve it before he does. Overall Hassan appreciates that Amir reads to him but Amir is mostly trying to "expose his ignorance".

    2. Destiny, very thoughtful and insightful post. I look forward to discussing this in class on Tuesday. But, until then, say more about "exposing his ignorance." How does this effect the relationship between Amir and Hassan? Think critically.

    3. In Hassan's eyes he has a loyal & trustworthy friend(Amir) but Amir is embarrassing him mentally. I believe that Amir should be teaching or showing Hassan how to read not making jokes that he can't. I also believe Amir is being very ignorant, disloyalty, and betraying Hassan. Eventually it might ruin their relationship.

response:I think amir doesnt realize what kind of friend he has.Hassan is very loyal to Amir but I dont think Hassan gets it back in return... This book relates to our society today in ways because I feel as though we put each other down to fit in.....I dont think Amir realizes how dependent loyal, and trustworthy Hassan is!!!

  5. Amir to me doesnt treat Hassan as a real friend. He picks on him because he doesnt get the same learning. Amir just needs to put himself in Hassan's shoes and he will realize how good he has it!

Hassan is a good friend, however i do not think amir returns the favor. I do not think friends should put each other down. Amir has a great friend and i do not know what it could take for him to realize it.

Response: Hassan and his father are just alike when it comes down to being a good friend and being loyal but I guess Amir and Baba Dont look at them as being they friend and they really shouldn't do them like that. In chapter 4 and 5 I felt like Amir shouldn't try to make his self feel smarter than Hassan because Amir goes to school while Hassan sit home and do work with his father. But I look at it like this Amir shouldn't call Him an imbecile because I think if you look Amir is really an imbecile and he shouldn't call his friend that he should at least try to teach him a little knowledge when it all come down to it.

    Response:
Hassan is illiterate because he is a poor servant. Amir is wealthy therefore he gets a good education. Amir exposes Hassan ignorance by asking poor Hassan words he don't know. Amir is basically embarrassing Hassan but he does not realize it. Hopefully Amir stops his ignorance and jealously toward Hassan so it what ruin there friendship.

Response:Literacy is the ability to read and write.Literacy determines your class. If you cant read or write then you might not be in the high or middle class. Hassan was poor and illiterate. Therefore he does not have a good education like Amir do. This topic reminds me of Frederick Douglass because when he was starting to read and write, he was becoming powerful. The slave masters had to let him go because of it.In both situations(Hassan and Amir and Frederick Douglass) I can definitely say knowledge is power!

  11. Even though Hassan had treated Amir like his brother, Amir never thought of Hassan as a friend because of the race and religious differences between them. Amir somehow discriminated the Hazara which is Hassan’s race and the Haraza’s religious beliefs.

Evidence:The curious thing was, I never thought of Hassan and me as friends either.

Hassan couldn’t read because he had to stay at home and help his father doing the house works instead of going to school.

Evidence:Hassan stayed home and helped Ali with the day’s chores: hand-washing dirty clothes and hanging them to dry in the yard, sweeping the floors,
